“Uncle Sam Desires You” Satirical Illustration – 1975

by Admin
Satirical illustration of Uncle Sam relaxing in a golf cart with a drink and golf clubs above the words “Uncle Sam Desires You.”

Published in Playboy in November 1975, this illustration twists one of the most recognizable images in American advertising and propaganda. Instead of the stern Uncle Sam pointing outward with “I Want You,” he lounges in a golf cart with a drink in hand under the headline “Uncle Sam Desires You.”

The joke depends on the familiarity of James Montgomery Flagg’s World War I recruiting image, but the 1970s version turns patriotic urgency into leisure, excess and middle-aged comfort. The golf clubs, cocktail and relaxed pose make the piece feel less like a call to duty and more like a satire of affluent American life, very much in keeping with the irreverent editorial illustration of the period.
