This 1982 photo captures Frank Zappa with his daughter Moon around the time of “Valley Girl,” their unlikely pop-culture breakthrough. The song appeared on Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch and featured Moon improvising the exaggerated “Valleyspeak” she heard among teenagers in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley.
What began as satire became a genuine hit. “Valley Girl” reached No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Zappa his only U.S. Top 40 single, while helping spread phrases and speech patterns associated with early-’80s Southern California youth culture far beyond Los Angeles.
