General Electric leaned into the personality of its portable 8-track player with the wonderfully unsubtle name Loudmouth. This mid-1970s ad presents the bright red player almost like a fashion accessory, complete with a shoulder strap, sing-along/PA microphone and a rose stretched across the page. GE promoted the Loudmouth as a way to take the increasingly popular 8-track format beyond the car and into genuinely portable listening.
By late 1975, Billboard described the Loudmouth as a successful part of GE’s portable audio line, just as the company was preparing its upgraded “Showoff” player with AM/FM radio. It’s a great snapshot of the brief period when portable 8-tracks occupied the space that cassette players and, eventually, boomboxes would dominate.
