Brandon Teena — Death of a Deceiver, Pat Andrea, 1995

by Admin
Pat Andrea painting depicting Brandon Teena as a stylized figure with an oversized male head and female figure positioned alongside it.

This painting by Pat Andrea accompanied Eric Konigsberg’s January 1995 article “Death of a Deceiver,” an early major magazine account of the life and 1993 murder of Brandon Teena, a transgender man from Nebraska. The article appeared in Playboy and later became notable as one of the prominent pieces of journalism examining the case, though some of its language and framing reflect the period in which it was written.

Brandon’s story would receive much wider attention several years later through Kimberly Peirce’s 1999 film Boys Don’t Cry, starring Hilary Swank as Brandon. Swank won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the role.
