Quentin Tarantino – 1997

This 1997 portrait catches Quentin Tarantino at an interesting point in his career, three years after Pulp Fiction turned him into one of the defining filmmakers of the decade. By then, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction had already established his mix of crime stories, nonlinear structure, pop-culture dialogue and deep-cut movie references.

That same year brought Jackie Brown, Tarantino’s adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s Rum Punch. Starring Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster, Bridget Fonda and Robert De Niro, the film shifted toward a more measured, character-driven style while still drawing heavily on Tarantino’s love of 1970s cinema.
