Aaron Neville – Illustration by David Levine – 1990

This 1990 illustration by David Levine captures Aaron Neville at a particularly strong moment in his career. The year before, the Neville Brothers had released Yellow Moon, produced by Daniel Lanois, and in 1990 the group won a Grammy for the instrumental track “Healing Chant.” Neville was also enjoying major crossover success through his duets with Linda Ronstadt, including “Don’t Know Much,” which won the Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

Levine’s drawing emphasizes Neville’s distinctive physical presence and stage persona, turning him into the kind of instantly recognizable cultural figure that suited his editorial caricature work. By this point, Neville had already spent decades moving between New Orleans R&B, soul, pop and the family sound of the Neville Brothers.
